国际音标有以下一些特点与优点：

（1）记音准确。国际音标是一音一符，一符一音。即一个音素只用一个符号表示，一个符号只能代表一个固定的音素。

比如汉语拼音中的“pa、zhang、ai、ian”，其中的四个a其实是四个不同的音素，但都用一个字母a表示，国际音标则分别用 （或 ）四个不同形体的字母表示这些不同的音素，只用a表示这几个音素构成的音位。

又如汉语拼音中的i，代表三个音素，国际音标就用三个不同的符号i、 、 表示，用i表示这三个音素构成的音位。

（2）形体简单清晰，便于学习运用。国际音标制定原则第五条规定：“新字母样子要跟老字母相似，可以一看就想到是代表哪一类音。”所以国际音标符号所代表的音素在很大程度上尽可能与传统的拉丁字母所表示的音类一致。

例如字母b、p、m是唇音，国际音标就用来表示双唇部位的音素，其中双唇部位送气的p增添附加符号‘（也可用小号的h附在字母的右上角表示）构成，其它如d、t表示舌尖中音，g、k表示舌尖后音，都“依国际习惯决定罗马字母的音质”（国际音标制定原则第四条规定），所以符合人们的使用习惯。
